ART 302 is a course offered at the UW, Seattle, called Extended Research and Public Exhibition Practice. The course offers individual and group exhibition opportunities, one of them being in the Odegaard Undergraduate Library, also known as Ode. I was inspired by the Bruce Lee installation, and wanted to add a sort of balance to the stairs above it.
The UW's motto is "Be Boundless," but I didn't want to be cliche about what the piece said or how it was displayed. The librarians told me during the planning stage that it was a widely used phrase. I settled on a few designs and made around 4-5 mockups. At a work-in-progress with classmates and my professor, I showed them 3 designs of my favorite but we all agreed none of them stood out too well.
After a discussion, my professor encouraged me to show them (the mockup that eventually became the final version), and they gave highly positive reactions about its design. I chose the color purple to overlay the piece for a sense of culture and comfortability.
